Poly Headset Connection Guide

Quick guide to help you choose the right version and connect your headset with ease.

Wired Connections

USB-A & USB-C

Most modern Poly headsets connect to a computer using USB-A or USB-C, including popular ranges such as BlackwireVoyager USB, and Savi USB models.

  • USB-A: Traditional rectangular USB connector found on most PCs and docking stations
  • USB-C: Smaller, reversible connector commonly found on newer laptops and tablets

💡 Tip: Always check your computer ports before ordering. Many Poly models are available in both USB-A and USB-C variants.

3.5mm Jack

Some Poly wired headsets include a 3.5mm audio jack, allowing connection to:

  • Smartphones
  • Tablets
  • Laptops without USB ports

This provides simple, flexible connectivity for mobile and portable devices.

Quick Disconnect (QD)

Many Poly professional headsets use a Quick Disconnect (QD) connection, particularly desk-phone-focused models.

QD allows the headset to connect to different devices by changing the cable, without removing the headset.

💡 Must-know for Poly:
Poly QD connectors are Poly-specific and are not compatible with Jabra or Axtel QD cables.

Wireless Connections

Bluetooth® Headsets

Bluetooth is widely used across Poly ranges such as Voyager and Focus, ideal for users who need mobility.

Typical Bluetooth characteristics:

  • Bluetooth version: Commonly Bluetooth 5.x
  • Range: Up to approx. 30 m / 100 ft
  • Power: Rechargeable via USB or charging stand

Many Poly Bluetooth headsets support dual connectivity, allowing connection to a computer and mobile phone at the same time.

DECT Wireless (Desk Phones & PCs)

DECT wireless is used in Poly ranges such as Savi and CS series, designed for office and call-centre environments.

  • Range: Up to approx. 150 m / 490 ft from base
  • Connection: Via DECT base station or USB dongle
  • Security: Encrypted DECT communication for stable, interference-free calls

💡 DECT vs Bluetooth:
Choose DECT for maximum range and reliability in office environments; choose Bluetooth for flexibility and mobile working.

Dual & Multi-Connectivity

Many Poly headsets can connect to more than one device at a time.

Examples include:

  • Voyager Focus / Voyager 5200 – Bluetooth with USB charging
  • Savi 7xx series – DECT, USB and desk phone connectivity
  • Blackwire USB headsets – USB-A or USB-C wired connections

Dual connectivity allows seamless switching between devices such as a laptop and mobile phone.

Microsoft Teams vs UC (Unified Communications)

Poly headsets are available in two main versions:

  • Microsoft Teams Certified (MS) – Includes a dedicated Teams button and native Teams integration
  • UC (Unified Communications) – Designed for broad compatibility with Zoom, Google Meet, Webex and other platforms

💡 Important: UC versions work perfectly with Microsoft Teams but do not include a dedicated Teams button.

Choosing the Right Poly Connection

  • Computer or laptop: USB-A or USB-C headset
  • Desk phone: QD headset or DECT wireless model
  • Hybrid working: DECT or Bluetooth headset with USB connectivity
  • Mobile use: Bluetooth headset
  • Call centres: DECT wireless models for extended range

Troubleshooting Connection Issues

  • Headset not recognised by PC: Try another USB port or reconnect the headset.
  • Bluetooth not pairing: Clear previous Bluetooth pairings and reconnect.
  • Poor sound quality: Ensure the headset is charged or move closer to the base or dongle.
  • No Teams controls: You may be using a UC model (fully compatible with Teams, but without a Teams button).
  • No audio on desk phone: Check you are using the correct Poly QD cable or DECT base.
